Third Party
Insurance
The first consideration is of course, to insure your
vehicle against claims from third parties. Your broker will advise
you on this, and should give you a couple of competetive quotations for
cover.
However, should you be trying to insure a vehicle that does not fit into one of the usual categories dealt with by insurance companies, (e.g. our 1969 MAN 630 L2A 4x4 13 ton truck!) then you might try contacting the Dutch company: Wiggers BV, of Amersfoort, who specialize in 4 x 4, old, and specialist vehicles. Their rates are very good, and they are well used to dealing with oddball requests from adventurers! We obtained third party cover, with green card, up to the Iranian border. It cost us 554 Dutch Guilders for a year.

Another bunch of 'good eggs' go under the unlikely name
of Jack Dent Insurance Associates, who
haunt London's Peckham region. Whilst not so hot on 'oddball'
requests, their extensive knowledge and experience in the insurance jungle
has often stood me in good stead. Malcolm and Allen work hard at
getting the right policy for the circumstances, and are well worth talking
to. Travel Insurance is no problem for them,
no matter where, or for how long you go! They supplied us with 12
months cover by HML Insurance, for £681. Thats less than half
the price we were quoted by some other European companies. The cover
is good too!

Anyone entering the state of Yugoslavia
(Serbia & Montenegro) with a vehicle, will be compelled to purchase
an insurance policy at the border. No green card cover is accepted,
and the minimum period of insurance is one month. Our truck
cost US$220. A guy with a Landrover paid US$160. We complained
that we had a 3 day transit visa, but we were told to pay
up or turn back. Please see our notes on ferry
services for a cheaper alternative route.
